Description Position at IDEA Public Schools Role Mission: The camp Nurse will evaluate and treat campers and staff for minor injuries and illnesses, supervise and ensure implementation medication policies and procedures at camp, keep a log of Health Center visits, give supportive advice to counselors and other camp staff if requested, and identify health problems serious enough to require a physician's attention. This role is temporary for the 2020 summer camp season. Accountabilities Care for the medical needs of campers and the camp staff

  • Oversee the health and wellness of approximately 200 campers and 30 staff members
  • Conduct initial health screening of all campers and staff
  • Provide medical attention to campers and staff with general health concerns and document in Camp Health Log
  • Distribute and record camper medications
  • Maintain health center record and medical forms
  • Communicate specific camper health needs (I.e. allergies, dietary restrictions, etc.) to staff
  • Communicate with Camp directors about camper health issues
  • Schedule appointments for sick/injured campers or staff to the hospital or clinic Other Job Duties
    • Act as liaison with local doctors, hospitals, and pharmacies
    • Be present at the registration of the camp session to check-in and file incoming health forms, record individual problems, note medications, and help the physician with initial screening
    • Stock first aid supplies in the Health Center and all areas of camp, and control outflow
    • Safeguard camper medication, and administer medication at prescribed dosages and hours
    • Participate in camp activities and events

          • Licensed Texas Registered Nurse
          • Prior experience working with children Knowledge and Skills:
            • The RN may be expected to use the computer to access the electronic health record system to log and keep track of medications
            • Able to adapt to different environments and schedules
            • Confidence in nursing skills
            • Responsible, hard-working
            • Good bedside manner - friendly and personable
            • Strong assessment abilities
            • Able to interact with boys and girls age 5-18 with varying ability levels. Physical Expectations:
              • Able to verbally communicate and work with youth with social skills and academic difficulties and provide necessary instruction to campers and staff.
              • Able to visually and auditorily observe camper behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce relevant safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior management techniques
              • Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid. Must be able to assist campers in an emergency, and possess strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers
              • This position will require prolonged standing, some bending, stooping, walking long distances, hiking, climbing, and stretching; requires eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity to manipulate outdoor equipment and camp activities, and the ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
              • This position is required to live on camp grounds for the camp term and work irregular hours with limited or simple equipment and facilities.
