Job Description:

Summary The Tow Truck Operator drives tow truck to retrieve customers motor vehicles for repairs to be completed at the dealership with customer consent only, and move motor vehicles at the request of Dealer approved agencies that are typically damaged by accident, stalled, or ticketed by law enforcement, referred to as non-consent tow jobs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Receives communication (call, email, text) or is dispatched to location by authorized dealership service or body shop personnel, customer, approved agency, like an Automobile Association/Organization, or law enforcement agency by radio, telephone, or verbal instruction at any hour of the day and any day of the year. Tows only for dealership - does not tow for hire or favor.

Exercises extreme caution when operating the tow truck and observes all operational and safety practices of the job, including traffic laws. Uses proper tools, safety equipment, and behavioral practices to safeguard person(s), equipment and vehicles, and avoid personal injury. IF its not safe, dont do it. Ask for help when needed.

Writes up a tow invoice on each job that is compliant with state law, to include complete vehicle and owner information, the 3rd party law enforcement requesting non-consent tow, date, time, mileage, weather conditions and any special labor needed to accomplish the job. Fill on pricing per approved rates and included detail explanations. Turn in tow invoices daily to the Service Office so that a dealership repair order (RO) can be opened. Customers will be provided a copy of the tow invoice upon payment for services and storage.

Pulls vehicle up on rollback and secures for travel, and/or attaches anti-sway bar to vehicle by means of cable, chains, or other grappling devices, and hoists one end of vehicle, using powered winch to tow vehicle to dealership service or impounding area, depending upon the type of job. Does not exceed mechanical or structural capacity of equipment.

Removes, bends, or cuts parts of damaged vehicles in preparation to towing. Provides minor service or repairs to vehicles along roadway or where parked, such as unlocking doors, towing/winching out stuck position (mud or small ditch) where vehicle can resume operation, and providing fuel, jump-starting and connecting loose wires.

Cleans up accident sites as per regulations and charges accordingly on the tow invoice.

Communicates with vehicle owners, representing the dealership professionally and offers our products and services, such as collision and paint refinishing repairs, maintenance and service agreements, and answers related questions to the best of ability. Will open up the impoundment lot to allow vehicle owner(s) to retrieve personal items from their vehicle when directed by the Service or Body Shop Manager.

Report any contraband in non-consent towed vehicles to the General Manager (fire arms, illegal substances, etc.).

Wears uniform and safety equipment at all times while on duty, including name identification and certification patches required by law.

Performs a tool/safety equipment inspection and mechanical maintenance check on tow truck each day. Maintains a detailed tool & equipment list (chain lengths, shovel, flares, etc.) and replaces shortages and corrects minor services. Reports losses and major service needs to the General Manager as soon as any item goes missing or is damaged. Keeps tow truck clean and in good operating condition. Has routine maintenance performed without fail. Will assist in acquiring tools and equipment as needed with the authorization of the General Manager.

NOTE: Dealership will replace tools/safety equipment broken or worn out in with normal use. Driver replaces items lost, stolen or damaged when not use for their intended purpose. Dealership will pay for mechanical maintenance and damages to truck not caused by driver. Driver pays insurance deductible, if any, or actual damages, whichever is less, for damage caused by the driver.

Makes repairs to the tow truck as skill level allows, or makes it available to dealership for repairs on a timely basis. When we cannot perform the repair and when drivable, delivers and retrieves tow truck to/from servicing business within 75 miles without additional compensation. There is no compensation when tow truck is out of commission.

Schedules auctions for impounded vehicles not claimed by owners with law enforcement authorities. Attends the auction to oversee that auctions are organized and orderly.

Attends all local meetings for tow operators and reports to supervisor all regulations, changes to regulations, and general market conditions and observations.

Submit to random drug and alcohol screenings as directed by the General Manager and required by state law.

Education and/or Experience
